Men and Women
The biggest factor for candidacy is the condition of donor hair. The donor area is a ring of hair from ear to ear in the back of the head. These follicles are commonly resistant to a hormone called DHT, which causes hair loss. Normally, hair harvested from this area will continue to be resistant to DHT even when transplanted. If healthy hair growth is present in the donor area then the patient is a good candidate for a transplant. If the patient’s hair is thinning everywhere including the donor area, this is called ‘diffuse hair loss’ and the patient is not a good candidate. Poor donor hair will not be resistant to DHT therefore the hair follicles will not last when transplanted. The best way to find out if you have diffuse hair loss is through a consultation. Hormonal imbalances or other medical conditions must also be ruled out.
For the ARTAS® procedure, hair color, texture, and degree of curliness must also be considered. This is not a factor with the Max Growth procedure.
Most men exhibit male pattern baldness, which is loss in the temporal peeks, the frontal hairline, the vertex and crown while the donor area (the ring of hair around the back of the head) remains healthy. Those with male pattern baldness are great candidates for the Max Growth Hair Transplant.
Women with female pattern hair loss also make excellent candidates. This type of loss is localized thinning on the front and top part of the scalp with healthier hair in the back and sides. This represents about a quarter to half the women we see. Also, women who have suffered hair loss due to mechanical or traction alopecia, which is caused by pulling and scarring due to braids or tight pony tails are also candidates.
Grafts and Sessions
It depends on the individual. Every person is completely different therefore the number of grafts needed is different for each person. The biggest factor is the size of the balding area. The more hair loss you have, the more transplanted hair you will need. There are other factors as well such as:
- Hair Color
- Hair Coarseness
- Scalp Elasticity
- Quality of Donor Hair
What is Overharvesting?
Too many procedures with the ARTAS® is not practical because the donor site can become over-harvested. The ARTAS® leaves small circular scars that affect the overall condition of the donor area beneath the surface of the skin. It also leaves a ‘thinner’ donor area because hair is now missing! With the linear scar, tissue is removed, remaining tissue is brought together and the donor tissue on each side of the scar is completely intact. The hair on each side of the linear scar is just as thick as it was before the surgery. In subsequent surgeries, the single scar is often times removed leaving only one linear scar every time.
Blood Flow Compromise
As more follicles are implanted there is an increased risk of vascular compromise (decreased blood flow to the area caused by injury to the scalp) and graft ‘popping’, all of which can lead to sub-optimum outcomes. The average ARTAS® graft contains 1.75 hairs, which means that there are more grafts in an ARTAS® procedure (but not more hairs). The Max Growth procedure includes a variation of graft sizes depending on the destination area (i.e. the frontal hairline will have 1 hair grafts to insure a natural result whereas the vertex has a mixture of graft sizes containing more hairs). This results in less grafts and less demand on blood flow. That is why ‘more hair’ is achieved with Max Growth. It is important to note that grafts are never too large to the point of looking ‘pluggy’. All results are perfectly balanced and natural.
More Opportunities for Hair Restoration
Again, the number of surgeries is based on the overall health of the donor area. As you saw in the previous explanation, each ARTAS® procedure compromises the health of the donor area substantially more than the Max Growth procedure. You can only thin out the donor area so much without it looking unnaturally thin. Plus, underlying scar tissue beneath the surface of the skin affects the health of the other follicles. A linear scar does minimal damage to the donor area when done right.
How Many Grafts?
|ARTAS®||1,500 Grafts at 1.75 hairs per Graft||2,625 hairs per surgery|
|Max Growth||25 sq. cm. tissue at 200 hairs per 1 sq cm.||5,000 hairs per surgery|
You probably noted in the charts above that we refer to ‘number of grafts’ in the ARTAS® procedure and we refer to ‘number of square centimeters’ in the Max Growth procedure. The ARTAS® is a robotic technique that is programmed to harvest a single follicle at a time. Each follicle could contain 1-4 hairs depending on the patient. Some patients may have a high occurrence of 3 and 4 hair grafts but the typical patient has an average of only 1.75 hairs per graft. A typical ARTAS® session yields 1,500 grafts.
Attempting to count the number of grafts in a Max Growth procedure would be misleading and meaningless because of the unique harvesting technique and strategy in this procedure. For example, a graft might contain just one follicle containing one hair. This type of graft is ideal for the frontal hairline or it can be used to fill in between larger grafts in the vertex area or the crown. Another graft might contain a 4 hair follicle and a 2 hair follicle. Keeping follicles together improves the natural appearance and lessens demand on the blood flow beneath the surface of the skin. It also doubles hair density. It’s also important to note that a Max Growth graft is never so large that it appears ‘pluggy’. It’s more accurate to scientifically calculate the number of hairs per square centimeter (the average patient has 200 hairs per sq. cm.) and patients will actually have a better idea of the number of hairs they will receive with the Max Growth method than with an ARTAS® procedure.
Should I Cut My Hair?
Donor Area Should NOT Be Trimmed: It is recommended that you do NOT cut your hair before the day of the surgery. The staff will prepare the donor area for harvesting by shaving a narrow strip of hair in the back of your head. Once the donor tissue has been removed, the tissue is brought together and sutured. The surrounding hair which remains lengthy will help conceal the suture line after the procedure.
How Will My Hair Look Afterwards?
It will take approximately 10 days for the suture area to heal. Expect redness in the suture area during healing time. You will also see redness in the transplanted area just as you would with the ARTAS®. Scabs will form and flake off during the first two weeks after your procedure. After that, you will not be able to tell that you had a procedure because your suture line will be concealed with the existing hair in the back of your head.
Once hair begins to grow sometimes as early as 4 months, you will see soft, natural results. You will be able to style your hair any way you like and your transplant will be undetectable.
How is Max Growth Different Than Hair Plugs?
Hair Plugs is a term used when referring to old style hair transplants done prior to the late 1990s. Surgeons harvested hair with a very large hair punch that is even larger than the type used by FUE surgeons today. The result was an unnatural hair transplant that resembled the head of a child’s toy doll. Because the Max Growth technique uses small hair grafts in their natural groupings, the transplant looks soft and natural.
Is the Max Growth Procedure Permanent?
Yes. Donor hair is taken from the back of the head where follicles are genetically resistant to DHT, a hormone that causes hair loss. When transplanted they retain their genetic attributes and will not be affected by DHT in the recipient area. This results in a transplant that will last a lifetime.
How Long does it take to Recover and Heal?
You can return to work in approximately 3 days. Healing time generally takes about 2 weeks for the redness to be completely gone. We recommend that you refrain from exercise for the first week. The sutures can be removed 10 to 12 days after the procedure.
When Will it Start to Grow?
After three to four months, you will start to see hair growth. By six months you will enjoy a noticeable improvement and after a full year, you will see the final results.
Will People Know?
The Max Growth procedure is virtually unnoticeable because the suture line is concealed beneath your hair. After about a month the redness disappears and it is difficult to find the line unless you are looking for it and know where it is. Patients often report that even their hairdresser does not realize they had a hair transplant. The hair growth is so gradual that friends and family will notice that you look ‘better’ but won’t realize you had a hair transplant.
Does it Hurt?
On the day of your procedure, you will have a seat in a comfortable chair while the doctor performs your hair transplant. You will be awake the entire time, able to watch TV, surf on the web or listen to your ipod. A local anesthetic will be administered during this simple outpatient procedure. You may feel a few pinches at first but you will be pleasantly surprised to discover that there is virtually no pain. After the procedure, some patients will experience some swelling and minor discomfort from one to three days and this can be treated with over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol. The doctor may also prescribe a mild pain killer for those who need it.
What will the linear scar look like?
At Sante Medical, our doctors use a specially developed suture technique that leaves a fine suture line that is difficult to be seen unless you specifically look for it. You can safely cut your hair with a 1 blade and still conceal the location of the suture line.
How Long Does it Take?
When compared to other hair transplant surgeries, an Max Growth procedure is relatively short lasting only 3-5 hours. During that time you will be seated in a comfortable chair designed for this type of procedure. Because this is a non-invasive outpatient procedure, you will be allowed to move around and have bathroom breaks. The length of the procedure will depend on your specific hair loss and hair restoration plan. You will enjoy quality patient care from our hair technicians who will make sure you are comfortable during the entire process.
ARTAS® or Max Growth?
Before you go any further, you must answer one important question to determine which option is right for you:
Would a linear scar be acceptable if:
- The scar could NOT be seen even with a very low haircut
- It resulted in more hair than you would get with an ARTAS® procedure at any facility
You have never noticed a linear scar of a skilled surgeon because that linear scar was unnoticeable!
The techniques and results of a strip style surgery differ from facility to facility. Just as every surgeon is completely different so is his or her linear scar. The most memorable linear scars are those depicted in popular advertisements for FUE and the ARTAS®. Unfortunately for those patients, a surgeon who lacked the skill and ability to achieve an unnoticeable suture line preformed their transplant. You’ve never taken note of a linear scar performed by a skilled surgeon because it was completely unnoticeable.
There are several different methods used when harvesting tissue for a hair transplant. Over the years, we have developed the most refined and effective linear harvest possible. If our results weren’t so astounding, we would not even consider continuing with both methods.
Is the Max Growth Really Worth It?
There is a reason we call our procedure Max Growth. As you must realize by now, you will achieve a more dramatic result with the Max Growth procedure even when compared with our very own ARTAS® transplant. Over the years, we have refined this open donor method and there are several factors that set our Max Growth procedure apart:
- Better harvesting and suture method
- A variation of unique graft sizes not used in mainstream strip surgeries
- Superior graft preparation (99% graft survival rate)
- Shorter surgery time meaning less time ‘out of the body’ (3-5 hours)
- Artful graft placement
Are there risks and side effects?
As with any type of surgical procedure, there are certain possible risks and side effects associated with hair transplantation. These may include:
- Post-surgical infection
- Unnatural new hair growth
- Folliculitis, an inflammation of the hair follicles
- Shock loss of transplanted hair
- Sudden loss of transplanted hair
- Swelling of the scalp
- Bruising around the eyes
- Crusting and itching on the areas of the scalp where hair was removed or implanted
- Numbness or lack of sensation on the treated areas of the scalp
These risks and side effects are rare. Careful choice of physician and careful adherence to medical recommendations, minimize these risks.
How Much Does It Cost?
Every patient is completely different. Even two patients with the same exact hair loss pattern might need a different number of grafts because there are so many factors that affect a hair restoration:
- Is the circumference of your head large or small?
- Is your donor area large or small?
- Is the area of balding large or small?
- Is your hair fine or course?
- Is your hair blonde or black?
- Is your hair curly or straight?
- Are your goals aggressive or moderate?
Did you know that each patient has a different distribution of one, two, three or four hair grafts? For example, some patients might have a higher occurrence of four hair grafts, which results in a fuller look. And some patients might have a larger number of one hair grafts. These are all things you will discuss with your doctor during the consultation.
Because of all these many factors, Sante feels that it is misleading to simply charge by the graft. Although it might seem tangible, it is really unfair to the patient. After all, those who have a high distribution of one hair grafts won’t get as much hair as a person who has a high distribution of four hair grafts. Other clinics sometimes divide four hair grafts into one-hair grafts in order to charge you more money per graft.
Another factor to consider is that traditional FUE procedures have a high rate of transection, which damages the follicle at the base of the root causing the graft that you have paid for to die. Max Growth harvesting eliminates transection rates up to 90%, which is even better than the ARTAS results.
It is our practice to reduce the surgical fee if you proceed with a larger procedure and payment options are available.
When looking for a facility, don’t make your sole decision based on price only. This is a cosmetic procedure that will affect your appearance forever. Consider many factors before deciding on a hair transplant clinic, such as the surgeon’s experience and qualifications, the patient results, the hair technician’s skill level and the accreditation of the facility.
Is there financing?
Financing is available for surgical hair restoration procedures through our partner MediCard. MediCard is an independent credit provider, and approval is based on MediCard’s qualifying factors. A credit application is required.
MediCard offers a variety of ways you can pay for your elective medical services. You can choose to finance the full amount or just a portion. Monthly payments can be customized to suit your budget, with payment options ranging from six months to five years.
